Painting Alla Prima is an exciting "wet-in-wet" oil painting technique that is rapid and
painterly. Loose and impressionist brushwork defines this painting style and is as popular today as in the past. This class is perfect for the serious beginner as well as the experienced artist - as classic methods are covered in every project and exercise. In an intimate group of 3 students maximum, strengthen Color knowledge, understanding of Values, Composition models and lively Brush Technique in the artist's studio. Work
from photo images and
advance to still life. The instructor demonstrates in every class.
Fee: $200 - Prepaid fee reserves an easel.
Includes atelier easel and light refreshments.
Duration: 4-Week Session, meets weekly for 3 hours.

Following up on the Introduction to Painting alla Prima in Oils, students will continue to work in the technique practiced in the previous class. Beginners are also welcome. Intermediate students will have a choice to use their own photographic material or teacher supplied. The class will work independently with individual guidance from the instructor. Catherine will lecture, give class demonstrations on advanced color theory and mixing, drawing, brush technique. The final class will enjoy the "Eatable Still Life" and toast to the love of life!

Plein Air Painting

Paint en Plein Air! Beginning and intermediate painters are welcome. Plein Air Painting (open air) is a perfect mix of artistic expression and love for the outdoors. The class will meet at Torrey Pines State Park, La Jolla Shores and Balboa Park. Students review how to select a view, develop a composition, identify the mass shapes of value and color, establish color harmonies, capture aerial perspective and believable light. Emphasis will be on loose, expressive “alla prima style” brushwork while supporting each painter’s individual style. The instructor’s easygoing, common sense approach will encourage and inspire. Each day includes demonstration, lesson handout, guided practice and critique.
FIRST CLASS: Meets on campus.
Bring all your gear. After a brief introduction, we'll go outside and paint.
